What is Rally Point Arizona?

So you all might think to yourselves "What is Rally Point Arizona? or "What can you for me?" or even "What have you done to help our vets?" I'm going to try to answer those questions in this post.

 Rally Point Arizona is a veteran’s initiative through La Frontera Arizona.  We are “Veterans serving veterans and their families” We act as a safety net for veterans, service members and their families.  Rally Point Members act as “Navigators”, providing direction through the veteran’s community support services, as well as assistance working with the Veteran’s Administration and Veteran’s Hospital.

 We are available to qualifying individuals:
A.      If a veteran needs help at any time
B.      For any kind of emergency
C.      Life threatening events (self or others)
D.     Suicidal thoughts
E.      Drugs/Alcohol Abuse
F.       Family/Domestic Violence
G.     Housing Crisis
H.     Medical Disorders
I.        Determining Educational Benefits

What Have We Accomplished?

In the past year, Rally Point Arizona has assisted veterans and their families receive health care, find 
housing solutions and receive educational benefits working with our partners in the V.A. Hospital, 
multiple Community Service Providers, and city, state and federal employees and programs such as the Veteran’s Court.

Note:  Rally Point Arizona submitted an application for a SAMHSA Grant, in an effort to assist veterans who have been charged with DUI and Domestic Violence Issues.  Results are Pending.

So that in a nutshell is who we are, what we do, and what we have done.

Celebrities = Heroes?

At the last Rally Point meeting, several of the gentlemen at the meeting brought up the fact that celebrities in in this country are treated as heroes, and veterans quite frequently, are seen as a burden. Why is it that Kim Kardashian, is (for lack of a proper term) "Hero-fied"? Why do we look up to people like her? What does she do? NOTHING. And yet our vets are treated as nobodies when they WILLINGLY put their lives on the lines to protect us and our freedoms.I think that the roles should be reversed, Civilian life is a lonely place for veterans. Feeling as if they're the only one's who have seen what they've seen. Our society in general doesn't understand veterans, and they feel like its a thankless job.

As we went through the group, each person vented about the subject above and they want to change societies view of veterans. What is it that we can do to change non-veterans view of veterans?

The group came to close and as I was leaving, I as well as everyone there turned to a peer and sincerely thanked them for their service. I got into my car and as I drove away I thought "Wow, I never thought about any of this before" I feel like I am starting to scratch the surface of understanding on the whole subject, but still have a lot to learn. I look forward to (as did all the rest of the guys) the next time there will be a meeting. and as a reminder:

So this is Rally Point Arizona, a place for veterans to get help they need, provided by other veterans. This blog is an unscripted account of what I see here in the veterans circles of Tucson, Arizona. I will try to update this at least once a week so that all that might read this can get the information they need to help themselves or loved ones. also i will talk about common problems that affect Tucson's veterans.

From what I've noticed, going to the few groups i have gone to, is that a lot of the veterans long for the sense of belonging and brotherhood they had when they were active. It's true as far as i understand, that when you are an active soldier in the military, you have a built in support system. Support of your mates going through the same things, at the same time, that help you cope and get through. Once you are out of the service its difficult to assimilate to civilian life.

at the groups it seems like the participants get that sense of brotherhood back, comparing stories, and sharing with one another the difficulties of transitioning into civilian life. But all of the people that show up leave feeling like a huge weight has been lifted.
